Choosing a Double Pram and Pushchair

A well-designed double pram or pushchair can simplify the lives of families, especially on busy footpaths or in stores and shops. Choose a model with generous storage space for stowing nappies, snacks and other essentials.

Some parents who are first-time parents opt for a future-proof pushchair which can be used as a single stroller at the time baby is born, and then changed to a twin mode after the baby arrives. Joolz offers a range of these options.

Tandem

The announcement that you're expecting a baby is one of life's most exciting experiences. However, once the initial excitement wears off and the reality sets in, you could be faced with a myriad of decisions about how to prepare your family for the arrival of your new one or one. One of the most important considerations is choosing the best pram or pushchair.

Tandem prams, also known as "in-line" double prams are a classic design that has two bassinets or seats placed side-by-side. The front seat is typically cushioned and reclines to a flat position, making it suitable for newborns and the second seat is more upright and can be used by toddlers from around three years older. Some models come with the option of reversible seating, which lets you choose whether your children face each other or look out at you. Many tandems also have the option to convert into a single pushchair when you decide that your oldest child does not require the second seat.

A tandem is more affordable than twin prams and double pram and pushchair is a great option for parents who wish to save money, but without compromising safety or functionality. A tandem can be a bit heavy and difficult to steer, particularly when bumping over kerbs. It's also less stable than twin pushchairs especially when a bigger child is riding in the front. A tandem can be difficult to fit on public transport, and it may be difficult to navigate narrow roads.

The iCandy Peach, a popular model that focuses on image, is an excellent alternative for parents who are single and want an attractive design. However, the tandem mode makes it feel a bit heavy and long to push. It comes with frames that can be expanded in size to accommodate a second seat. The best double prams and pushchairs are able to be used in multiple ways, and some are even able to change into different seat configurations to suit the changing needs of your family. It is possible to fit up to three children on the seat board or two toddlers in the seats, with enough space to carry a shopping bag. Accessories like rain covers are also available. Typically, convertible double strollers are more spacious and heavier than single pushchairs as they must be capable of holding two or more children. Our test participants were awestruck by the City Select's unique one-handed fold, although it requires a bit of practice. It is also quite responsive and nimble in spite of its size.

The Cybex Mockingbird single-to-double stroller is an alternative that is affordable. It can be converted from a parent-facing infant car seat to a forward-facing toddler seat and the bassinet option is a fantastic option for infants (although remember that babies under 4 months old should not be able to sleep in strollers due to the risk of asphyxia in a position).

If you want more flexibility look into a convertible with dual modes such as the iCandy Peach. It's a slim double stroller that is able to accommodate two children at the same time. It can also be used to make a tandem by adding a second seating kit. It's nimble and responsive and our test participants loved its sleek design. It's not as light as some of the other pushchairs in our list however it does come with an enormous shopping basket that is ideal for parents with bags full of toys and groceries.

Lightweight

Some parents prefer to secure their double pushchair if they have one child and are expecting another so a convertible option is an excellent choice. The iCandy Peach can be converted from a single pushchair double with the addition of a toddler's seat, or the brand's carrycot (which is great for sleeping at night). The seats are very comfortable and our testers appreciate that they can be reclined in various positions. They also love the design of the canopy, which has a peekaboo window and UPF 50+ protection. The rear seat can be lifted high to offer an elevated platform for the older child to get off and on so they can access items in the shopping basket.

The only downside to the iCandy Peach is that it is quite heavy. However, Cher felt it was offset by its ease to move around and how big the storage space is, with two hanging parent and child cup holders as well as seat-back pockets, and an enormous underseat basket. She also liked the fact that the seats are reversible, so they can be placed to face each other for siblings who want to chat and interact together when out and out and about.

The Delta Children LX Side-by-Side Stroller is a smaller model and still impressive. It weighs just 18 pounds, is lightweight, and has a self standing fold, making it easy to transport or put in your trunk. Parents love the quality of the materials and craftsmanship as well as the price is low. The only drawbacks are that the seats do not recline as much as other models we've tried and the rear seat isn't as well-lit because of its position - it is raised higher than the first seat.
